How to calculate a price after tax and fees
The sticker price is only the starting point. Use this method to estimate what leaves your account at checkout and what the purchase may cost during its first year.
The formula
Upfront total = item price + tax + delivery + service fees + tip.
If tax applies only to the item, calculate it as item price × tax rate. Then add the other charges. For a first-year estimate, add monthly maintenance × 12.
Worked example
A $1,000 item with 8% tax creates $80 in tax. Add $30 delivery and a $20 service fee: the upfront total is $1,130.
If the item also costs $10 per month to maintain, add $120 for the year. The first-year total is $1,250.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting delivery, installation, or platform fees.
- Applying the wrong tax rule to fees or shipping.
- Ignoring required accessories or recurring maintenance.
- Comparing sticker prices when sellers structure fees differently.
